Federer, who is widely considered the greatest tennis player in the history of the men’s game, confirmed last month that he will skip the entire clay court season. But 1970 French Open champion Ion Tiriac believes the Swiss superstar is wrong to pick and choose which tournaments he plays in.
He blasted: “Roger Federer is certainly the best player ever, but he does not behave correctly.
“I do not think his approach is fair.”
Federer is not expected to return to action until the Gerry Weber Open in Halle in June.
But Tiriac, who was also a professional ice hockey player, believes his approach would not be welcome in any other elite sports.
He told German publication Sport Bild: “Lewis Hamilton does not just say no more after five Grands Prix in Formula One, because he does not feel like it.”Federer lost his No 1 spot in the world rankings to Rafael Nadal after crashing out of the Miami Open to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round.
Meanwhile, Tiriac also slammed the fact that men and women earn the same prize money at the four Grand Slam tournaments.
The 78-year-old Romanian businessman hosts the Madrid Open and claims male players are fed up with the pay equality.
“That’s where we mix politics with business,” he said. “I’m hosting the tournament in Madrid, with the same prize money for men and women.“But the revenue from women is only 25 percent. That’s a fact.
“The men ask me, ‘Ion, how long are you going to pay the women with my money?’”
