The 2016 edition of Wimbledon is fully underway as the first round has been completed and we approach the first weekend of play. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look it), we’ve yet to experience any major upsets or shocks so far, but we can sure bet it will as the matches continue and the plots thicken.
The only main excitement thus far at Wimbledon was the big victory for local British amateur Marcus Willis, ranked 772nd worldwide, who managed to defeat Ricardas Berankis, a Lithuanian pro ranked 54th. Of course the local underdog story was charming, especially when it was told that Willis was inspired by his girlfriend to keep trying in the sport. However, such fairytales often come to a quick end, and Willis was dispatched in the 2nd round by legendary tennis player Roger Federer. Nevertheless, the story is the type of thing that makes early round action at Wimbledon quite fun.
But as the tournament progresses and the big players assert themselves, the pressure will be set to magnify. Of course Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic will be making the headlines as they approach yet another Grand Slam title. And perhaps we’ll hear of a great run by another British player by the name of Andy Murray, who will be near certain to contend at Wimbledon’s latter stages. But who knows, with the inspirational victory by Marcus Willis, perhaps there will be more surprises than anticipated as Wimbledon rolls on to another fantastic climax!
