Germany’s Angelique Kerber shocked the tennis world, beating the heavy favorite number 1 seed Serena Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the Australian Open final. Kerber was ranked No. 6 in the world.
Serena was attempting to tie Steffi Graf’s Open era count of 22 Grand Slams for the second time, losing at the U.S. Open in the semifinals to Roberta Vinci.
“You did so well, let me be the first to congratulate you,” a teary-eyed Williams said on court. “You truly played so well in the moment.”
I think this is actually a very good development for the Women’s game to see a new Champion get crowned. Will this usher in a new era of German tennis?
