Rafael Nadal has been one of the most dominant tennis players of the last decade, winning dozens of ATP Tour tournaments and each of the 4 Grand Slam events. He is particularly impressive on clay, and has won the French Open a record 9 times! However, despite all his accolades and his World No. 3 ranking, Nadal has never won the Lacoste Miami Open. Will 2015 be the year that the Spaniard finally claims this title?
Nadal has typically done very well at this tournament, but simply cannot get over the hump and win it all. He has been in the final match 4 times, but has fallen on each occasion, most recently to Novak Djokovic in 2014. The exciting championship point is worth revisiting:
His most agonizing defeat was when he fell in a 3rd set tiebreaker in 2011, also to Djokovic. But there’s no doubt that overcoming his past and winning this tournament would mean a lot to Rafa. Held in the city of Miami and full of Spanish culture, it really would be satisfying to see Nadal take the title. But while a healthy Nadal can certainly compete against Djokovic (he leads their all-time meetings 23-19), a rising crop of star youngsters like Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, and Marin Cilic will make the event more competitive in the upcoming years.
One of the other major concerns for Nadal is his mounting injury struggles. Despite his appendicitis surgery in 2014, Nadal is . back for the 2015 season and ready for the Australian Open, but who knows what physical shape he’ll be in by the spring, and if he will even be fit for the Lacoste Miami Open. But that’s a question for another day.
