Since taking two straight Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013, former world number 1 woman Victoria Azarenka has fallen far. She hasn’t won a single additional Grand Slam tournament and experienced a torturous 2014 filled with injuries and early exits. She even broke up with her musician boyfriend Redfoo of LMFAO!
But tennis loves a comeback, and despite her current ranking of 31st, perhaps Azarenka could come back to Australia and resurrect her career in the place where it took off just 3 years ago. One thing pointing in her favor is that the early season Australian Open is a major challenge for many stars who have been on break for several months and are just getting back into their groove. Because of this, surprise runs by underdogs can often be the norm. Perhaps Azarenka can get into form quicker than her rivals.
But placing high hopes on her claiming this Grand Slam may be premature. Azarenka missed much of the 2014 WTA season through various injuries and hasn’t played since the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Japan in September. It may actually take her longer to rediscover her game than others.
We’ll get an early look at her during the 2015 Brisbane International tournament, which should give us some indication as to whether she is poised to make headlines at the Australian Open. While winning the event for a 3rd time this year might be a bit of a long shot given all her recent struggles, a deep run could reinvigorate her career. It’s also worth noting that Azarenka is still just 25 years old. I fully expect her talent to take her back to the top of women’s tennis sometime in the near future. The question is when?
