This past June my husband Chris and I were able to experience the trip of a lifetime and attend Wimbledon with a package from Championship Tennis Tours. Even though nearly six months has passed since our trip, I cannot stop looking back and smiling! It truly was a dream-come-true for both of us!
Chris and I woke up bright and early to take the Underground to Wimbledon to vie for a spot in the queue. I did not know what to expect but felt growing excitement as we approached the people patiently waiting in queue lines for their magic numbers! The mass of humanity already waiting in line was unbelievable, and I was shocked by the many tents set up by people who were already camping out for the following day! Chris and I arrived by 6:30 a.m. and were blessed to get a number. We were one step closer to Wimbledon! After receiving our numbers we waited in our spot in the queue for a few hours, however, it didn’t feel that long. We spoke with kind people about their previous Wimbledon experiences, had some coffee (from the provided vendor) and felt anticipation as we anxiously waited to see if we would be admitted. By 9:00 a.m.the queue line was moving toward the Wimbledon grounds!
The stewards were helpful and kind, and the entire Wimbledon queue experience ran like a well-oiled machine! Finally, by 10 a.m., we were through the gates! Inside the coveted Wimbledon gates there was much excitement…we still couldn’t believe we were there! The beauty of the grounds is unrivaled in tennis. The gorgeous purple flowers and greenery cascading down the beautiful red brick buildings was something I will never forget. I was amazed and in awe of how pristine it all was!
At exactly 10:30, the large gates to the grounds opened and, accompanied by a lively band, we were off to the outside courts to find a seat. On our way to court three we walked by a practice court, and I was thrilled to see my favorite player, Roger Federer, warming up! I was literally a few feet away from him, so I had the perfect opportunity to snap a few photos!
The entire day was one incredible experience after another! We were able to watch many great athletes play, purchase souvenirs at the Wimbledon shop, eat delicious food, drink delicious drinks (including my first Pimms) and see the coveted “Hill.”
During our time in London we were able to not only visit Wimbledon but stay in the luxurious Savoy Hotel! It was such a treat! The Savoy is situated perfectly within walking distance of many great restaurants, shops, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, and other tourist attractions. We walked many miles taking in the beautiful sights of the city and popped into cafes at all hours of the day and night to grab a tasty bite! We visited Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey. One morning we traveled two hours by train to spend a day in Paris where we visited the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre, followed by a delicious cappuccino in a picturesque park! Back in London we also had the opportunity to attend “Jersey Boys,” which now ranks as my favorite show!
To end our trip on the highest note possible, we were able to attend the mens finals at Wimbledon and experience an epic five-set match starring Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer! Talk about a dream come true! Prior to heading to the match we were able to dine at The Gatsby Club and enjoy a delicious three course meal with unlimited beverages in a beautiful, swanky, modern setting! Center Court was even more amazing than I ever imagined; people were dressed to impress in lovely sun dresses and slacks with corresponding fedora caps! Within sight of our seats, I spotted Princess Kate and Prince William, as well as David and Victoria Beckham, also enjoying the finals! It was surreal!
To take it all to another level, the five-set match between Djokovic and Federer was beyond exciting, and everything I could have hoped for in a final! Both players are unbelievably talented, and witnessing that match is something I will never forget! In the end Djokovic was the victor, and we were able to enjoy the emotional awards ceremony and the players’ speeches. Both of these men are truly class acts!
To say this trip was a dream-come-true doesn’t begin to do it justice! It was absolutely the trip of a lifetime, and I am so grateful that we were able to attend and enjoy such a prestigious event. We look so forward to attending another Grand Slam with Championship Tennis Tours in the future. And hopefully, if I’m lucky, we will attend Wimbledon again! I surely hope so!
