While she remains the top-ranked woman in professional tennis on the WTA Tour, no one would dispute the fact that Serena Williams has endured a rough 2014. Full of injuries, surprise defeats, and mysterious illnesses, Williams has won just 2 WTA tournaments and not a single Grand Slam event, where she has performed exceptionally poorly this year.

But amidst this personal turmoil, the 32-year-old Serena could salvage the season with a championship at the 2014 US Open! An event that she has won 5 times throughout her career (including 2012 and 2013), the American Williams has made the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center her home.

Serena Williams US Open Victories

Serena Williams has won the US Open in 1999, 2002, 2008, 2012 and 2013. Can Serena defend her US Open title this year?

As she has grown older, Williams has entirely defied all logic with regards to aging; that is until this year. Several tournaments have ended in withdrawals or clear signs of discomfort as she as stumbled to yet another surprising loss. Though for those hopeful fans, whenever she has been able to play her game and trademark power have been on full display. Whether she wins the US Open or not will depend almost entirely on how healthy she is.

However, many other tennis stars will also be blocking her path, including Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, Eugenie Bouchard, and Agnieszka Radwanska. In fact, this extremely competitive landscape of our current women’s singles tennis sport is what keeps Serena Williams so highly ranked. No single player has been able to really dominate the game like Williams has in recent years, which repeatedly gives her the edge.

Serena Williams has looked to be back in good shape at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California, so let’s see if she can keep the good running going in the buildup to the 2014 US Open. If she can, Serena Williams will surely be the women’s favorite heading into the tournament! If not, the lingering questions about her declining ability will continue to grow…
