With Wimbledon set to begin tomorrow, the pre-tournament media interviews have added a bit of spice to the generally respectful sport of tennis.  It all began when Serena Williams opened her mouth and criticized an un-named player for dating a man with a “black heart” and denouncing that player with the dreaded “boring” label.

Reading through the lines and understanding that Maria Sharapova is currently dating a reported ex of Williams, the Russian tennis star hit back at Williams and questioned her own relationship to a man currently embroiled in a divorce.

The juicy jabs between players have circled through the pre-Wimbledon media coverage, and have brought some animosity and drama ahead of the world’s most prestigious Grand Slam.  Although Williams has since publicly apologized for igniting the feud, there will certainly be an added personal intrigue should these two players meet in the Wimbledon final.

On the court, Williams has dominated Sharapova ever since that memorable 2004 Wimbledon final, when Sharapova stunned the tennis world and won the championship.  Serena Williams has established a run of 13 straight victories over her adversary, and has cemented herself as the world’s number 1 player.  So any reason why she would feel the need to insult Sharapova is beyond me, but it certainly could provide Sharapova with the kind of personal motivation to spur on an upset in this tournament.

Make no mistake about it, the tennis world would love nothing more now than to see these great players battle it out in the final match at Wimbledon.  Although the French Open saw Serena Williams defeat Sharapova in straight sets, this new twist in the plot could result in a whole new game.  Easy there, ladies!
