With clay season upon us, many ladies of the WTA tour will be taking their tennis games to Charleston, South Carolina, where the Family Circle Cup offers a purse of $750,000. Featuring a draw headlined by world number 1, Serena Williams, the Family Circle Cup is proud to bring the finest players that women’s tennis has to offer.
FAMILY CIRCLE TICKETS & PACKAGES AVAILABLE
The 9 day tennis tournament is a brief affair and is played on the green clay courts of the Family Circle Tennis Center that seats over 10,000 spectators. With clay courts favoring the more physical tennis players, a player like Serena Williams will be heavily favored as she goes for her third Family Circle Cup title, and second victory in a row following her win here last year.
The field is quite talented, however. Venus Williams (ranked 18) will attend with her sister, while Italian Sara Errani (ranked 7) will be looking to improve upon her impressive 2012 season. 2012 saw Errani collect two Grand Slam Doubles championships, and she followed those up with an Australian Open Doubles win earlier this season with Roberta Vinci. On her own in the singles tournaments, Errani had a great 2012 reaching the French Open final, US Open semifinal, and Australian Open quarterfinal. Will she be able to build on her success and win a singles tournament here?
Another player to watch at the Family Circle Cup is Sloane Stephens (ranked 16). Having defeated Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of this year’s Australian Open, the 20 year old looks set to become a future star of the game.
The matches will be played day and night throughout next week, and will surely provide much fun in the warm, southern spring weather of Charleston.
